Discover how you can let the confidence of your life trust in your GOD! Forget about the people, relationships, the job, world news, current affairs, and all the things that seem to slip away from our control. David says, “My soul trusts in you…. For my soul is among the lions (the Godly), and I lie among the men on fire (the prophets)…” and he strengthened himself in the lord when everyone was against him. He always went with the purposes that God put in him rather than the thoughts and strategies that the people tried to push on him. He never let the circumstances affect him, he was a man whose soul trusted in HIM!

Chapter 1 – Anointings Journey

I sit in my church, thinking of a way to start writing this life-changing devotional. I can only think of the different situations this devotional may find you: lonely, sad, confused, searching for answers, facing death, sickness, career, relationships, family, finances, sin, addiction, habits, or hopelessness. The title ‘My Soul Trusts in You’ is a general phrase until that 5-word phrase indeed entirely describes your present situation. At which point, everything is serious, nothing is a joke, and I would encourage you to finish this small devotional at the soonest, not once but as many times as you can because I pray and firmly believe that it will help you know the precious Heart of God towards you.

So, whatever situation you are in, I pray and ask God that at the end of this devotional, the phrase ‘My soul trusts in you’ won’t be a last resort phrase said in hopelessness but a bold lifestyle statement to stride and scream “MY SOUL TRUSTS IN YOU!!”

So, let’s discover “My Soul Trusts in You – Jesus!”

Psalms 57 is one of those chapters in the Bible that we all must know for the times that leave us lonely, depressed, and hopeless, like there is no way out. But before we go discovering this very amazing-full of revelation bible chapter. Let me give you some context.

In 1 Samuel 16, God says to Samuel, “Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” (because Saul is insecure about losing his kingdom and thus is paranoid about saving it), and the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say,’I have come to sacrifice to theLord. So, Samuel does what the Lord suggests. Now, you should know that Samuel is not in the best of his moods at this point. He is just reeling from his supreme anger with Saul and his blatant disobedience and lies. Samuel was so angry that he called ‘Agag’ the enemy king whose life Saul spared in his disobedience and quite literally hacked him to pieces with a sword unto death. So, everyone thought a billion times before messing with Samuel – they were terrified of him.

And this man who just hacked a king to death was walking into Bethlehem with a secret agenda – to anoint a new king, but no one was asking him for his plan. No one knows why he was there except for what he tells them, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.” Now, Samuel invites Jesse and his sons and consecrates them to anoint one of them as king, but again, nowhere in the chapter are the sons of Jesse told what’s up; they are simply following the will of the prophet.

Samuel walks to one son after another, assuming they are the next king, but seven sons later, and none of them are selected; Samuel asks Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” Now, to imagine the sheer indifference of Jesse shocks me. Jesse gave more importance to feeding the sheep than having David, his 8thson, attend Samuel’s invitation. Clearly, Jesse had discernment issues. Jesse responds to Samuel, saying, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” THE SHEEP? I mean, was David rejected or rejected? Jesse politely suggests that David can’t come because the routines are more important. Jesse was blind to see the prophetic because he was too busy with his work ethic.

Obviously, the prophet ignores all the suggestions and says, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed DAVID among his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward.

The last sentence, “the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward,” is the key to understanding everything about “My Soul Trusts in You.”

We also need to understand that David had no idea that Samuel just anointed him king, and neither did he have the career aim of becoming king.

Still, yet, it was that from that day onwards, the steps of David began to be ordained and designed by the Spirit upon him. All pointing towards – being king. Everything he did and everywhere he went was the “journey that the anointing was taking him on.”

Day 2

Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:14-23

Chapter 2 –Anointing That can be seen.

The Bible is full of themes and concepts hidden by God for us to discover, understand and use. And one such concept is that the anointing CAN BE SEEN or Recognised by the people around us. This recognition will facilitate and nudge us further into the journey of our blessing – to accomplish the fullest calling. Here are a few texts about different people in the Bible who went on to do great things for the kingdom of God but at some point, people were able to SEE/RECOGNISE something in them.

Moses.

Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she SAW that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.

Joseph.

But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest. They couldn’t say a kind word to him. One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever.

Daniel and his Friends.

King Nebuchadnezzar ordered his chief of staff to bring to the palace some of the young men of Judah “Select only STRONG, HEALTHY, and GOOD-LOOKING young men. Make sure they are well versed in every branch of learning, are gifted with knowledge and good judgment, and are suited to serve in the royal palace….” Whenever the king consulted them in any matter requiring wisdom and balanced judgment, he FOUND them ten times more capable than any of the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.

Daniel.

Daniel soon proved himself more capable than all the other administrators and high officers. Because of Daniel’s great ability, the king made plans to place him over the entire empire. Then the other administrators and high officers began searching for some fault in how Daniel handled government affairs, but they couldn’t find anything to criticise or condemn. He was faithful, always responsible, and completely trustworthy.

Jesus.

After three days, they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents SAW him, they were astonished.

What do you recognise in these few texts?

Let me tell you what I see. At some point, those people that surround the prophets, the revolutionists, and the anointed have been able to recognise the hand of God upon them; some react with honour and support, but some with jealousy and hatred. Although we cannot say how people respond to this recognition, one thing is for sure: ANOINTING CAN BE SEEN.

What do you see about yourself? What can you see in your prophetic eyes? What if David let all the rejection get to him? What if Jesus felt rejected because his brothers left him? What if Moses’ mother never made that basket and put Moses on the Nile? Note Moses’ mother did something in her impulse, but it was still a step ordained by God. What if Daniel and his friends gave in to the peer pressure?

We cannot let our circumstances determine our purposes. OPEN YOUR EYES and see what the Lord has in store for you.

Day 3

Scriptures: Daniel 1:3-4, Exodus 2:1-10, Genesis 41:38-39

Chapter 3 –Anointing creates room for You in the presence of Kings.

Joseph, Moses, Esther, Ruth, David, Daniel

What do these names have in common?

All these are the names of people who come from very underprivileged, oppressed, and

demanding situations, and yet, God takes them and places them in the presence of kings.

Did you know that David had no idea what was happening in chapter 16? He even had no idea that the prophet Samuel was coming to his father Jesses house to anoint someone as king. He was always alone. He went shepherding alone, he worshipped alone – but those that rejected him were witnesses to a monumental anointing that in just a few verses, He also finds himself in the king’s presence. David found himself in the right place at the right time, doing the right things in the right way, winning favour in the hearts of people and God.

Saul said. “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him here.”
One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. He is also a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the Lord is with him. “So David went to Saul and began serving him. Saul loved David very much, and David became his Armor bearer. Then Saul sent word to Jesse, asking, “Please let David remain in my service, for I am very pleased with him.”

Same with Esther, God created her room in the presence of the King.

Same with Ruth, She was taken as a wife to the most eligible man Boaz (A picture of Jesus).

Same with Daniel, He was more intelligent than anyone in the kingdom.

Same with YOU!

THE ANOINTING can be seen, and IT will make room for you in the presence of the Kings.

Day 4

Scriptures: Psalms 57:1-4, 1 Samuel 30:3-5

Chapter 4 –The Anointed Discover God.

Now, Coming to the most critical, Psalms 57.

I find it is one of the most amazing full-of-revelation portions of scripture.

You have to understand the conditions of David as he writes this psalm. The Bible says that David cried louder than Jonathan when Jonathan came to him with the news of Saul’s schemes. He was running from Saul to save himself from being killed. He is forced to separate from his army, family, and friends and has none to trust. David was the greatest fearless, bold warrior and now finds himself running. David finds himself hungry and tired. He acts like a madman drooling all over himself to save himself. He travels without a sword, signifying his absolute nakedness – No money, no equipment for safety, no friends, and no food.

So, David finally wants to stop running and does what will permanently put an end to Saul’s pursuit. David flees to the enemy territory with the 600 men with him. And this king was good to David and his men. Eventually, the king finds himself fighting Israel and puts David in a highly complex situation by asking him to come and fight against his blood brothers Israel. As if all that David is going through wasn’t enough, now David is also torn between two decisions. Fortunately, David didn’t have to fight that war, and as he returned to his place of refuge, he saw that his city was on fire and all the children, women, cattle & wealth were taken away.

And everyone with David wanted to stone him to death. Imagine the mental state of David. If this were in 2022, David would have been diagnosed with trauma, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, depression, and personality issues, and his mental health prescription would be a book.

David has no one to strengthen him. Expect himself and the words of Jonathan, which boosted his hand in the Lord. In his loneliness and wretchedness, David had to remind HIMSELF of Jonathan’s words. He had to remind HIMSELF of the God that protected him from the lion and the bear. He had to remind HIMSELF about the God who delivered Goliath into his hand. He was his counsellor and his own encourager. He does not look at the man or fears the schemes because His Soul now trusts in GOD! That is the beginning of Psalm 57.

In all the chaos and noise, David, after strengthening himself in the Lord, says in verse 1,

Be merciful to me, O God!
For MY SOUL TRUSTS IN YOU;
And in the shadow of Your wings, I will make my refuge,
Until these calamities have passed by.

When I read this psalm and comprehended the total weight of David’s situation, I asked myself, ‘How did he get his trust in God? What makes him trust in God? Why does he trust in God?’ I didn’t have to wonder long because David explains the How, What & Why in verse 4

‘My soul is among lions;
I lie among the sons of men
Who are set on fire,
Whose teeth are spears and arrows,
And their tongue a sharp sword.’

Many commentaries and people interpret this as David being among enemies. But I believe David was talking about the Lion of Judah. He was talking about the man on fire – Jonathan, who spoke words that stirred David up and strengthened his hand in God. David’s trust came from remembering what was planted deep in his soul. He may feel weary, lonely & defeated on the outside, but on the inside, in his soul, he is resting among the men on fire. Resting so God, his redeemer and deliverer, can take the wheel.

I have goosebumps as I write this.

We need to understand that the trajectory of our life depends on the people we surround ourselves with, the church we go to, the music we feed our soul, the sermons we hear, and the revelation we search for. If you have no Jonathan who will deposit fire in you, run and find a Jonathan – a man of God on fire, filled with His Spirit. His Spirit is set on fire and will set you on fire.

The anointed host the anointing, and the anointing hosts the fire.

Surround yourself with a good bible based church and a pastor. Get lit up. Discover God in what is deposited inside you. RUN WITH IT.

Day 5

Scriptures: 1 Samuel 30:16-20, Psalms 57:4

Chapter 5 – The Anointed Recover all.

Then David, amid all those who want to stone him for the situation and the loss that has come upon them and their families, was lit up with God’s fire and strength because he strengthened his hand in God.

David asks God if he should pursue and rescue all those and all that the enemy has taken, and sure enough, the Lord tells David to go, for he shall surely recover all!

And David runs and pursues and fights them so hard from morning to night, and there is nothing that David spared. David slaughtered and scattered the enemy so much that no two men escaped together. And Sure enough, David recovered all. He recovered not just his wives, the children, and all their possessions. But he also plundered the enemy. David was multiplied in wealth. ALL because “MY SOUL TRUSTS IN YOU – FOR MY SOUL IS AMONG THE LIONS, I LIE AMONG SONS OF MEN SET ON FIRE”

David now was not in fear, but he was feared. David was no longer poor. He was multiplied.

David was no longer alone. He found God inside.

The anointing brought David through a journey, and David trusted God and the ordination of his steps. David saw victory. And so will you.

AMEN!
