Trauma to Testimony
Day 1
Scripture: John 4:1-42
The Woman At The Well’s Story
Read John 4: 1-42 – Reading this will help you as we start this devotion and get your heart to sit at this encounter that the woman at the well had with Jesus and how it relates to OUR many encounters with Jesus.
Today, we begin a journey into the life-changing experience between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. Her story is a profound reminder that no matter how scarred our past may be, God’s love can bring healing and restoration. Picture a woman who knew pain, rejection, and hardship all too well. The Samaritan woman’s life was a series of struggles and disappointments. She had walked a path marked by broken relationships and societal judgments. With multiple failed marriages and a current relationship that lacked commitment, she was an outcast in her community. Her past and her reputation hung over her like a dark cloud, preventing her from finding proper peace and acceptance. Many of us can resonate with the Samaritan woman’s story. We might carry the weight of past mistakes, traumas, and regrets. Just like her, we may have felt judged by society and wrestled with self-condemnation. But in her brokenness, something extraordinary occurred. As she arrived at the well one life-changing day, she encountered Jesus—a man who saw beyond her past and mistakes. He perceived her heart, her pain, and her yearning for something more. Jesus offered her living water, a spiritual refreshment that could quench the deepest thirst of her soul. His words of love and acceptance shattered the chains of her past.
Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on your own life. Are there areas where a rough past or traumatic experiences have left their mark? Have you ever felt like an outcast, weighed down by shame or judgment?
Prayer: Dear Lord, just as You met the Samaritan woman in her brokenness, I pray that You meet me in mine. Your love, grace, and living water are available to cleanse and restore me, no matter my past. I surrender my burdens to You, trusting in Your transformative power to bring healing and redemption to my life. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Day 2
Scriptures: Psalms 14:2, Psalms 34:18, Isaiah 43:19, Romans 8:38-39
An Encounter With Jesus
The Lord watches over us from heaven, seeking those who understand and seek Him (Psalm 14:2). Just as Jesus disrupted His disciples’ plans to reach the Samaritan woman, He desires to meet us where we are. We can be in the middle of a mess, chaos, and overwhelmed by life but we are still a part of His plan – His Master Plan. Sometimes, it’s that unexpected encounter that changes everything. I had such a moment at my high school graduation, a time when I felt undeserving because of my past and my reputation. But God intervened, showing me His love. This encounter transformed me and set me on a new path, serving in my church and inspiring others to find hope in Christ. One encounter can bring light and freedom, lifting the weight of life’s burdens. May we come to understand that nothing can stop us from God’s love – it heals, it restores, it renews, it redeems even the most broken and lost.
Reflection: Take time today to reflect on your encounter with Jesus. Remember the moment when you felt His presence and knew that He was calling you. Don’t be afraid to dive deep into this memory.
Prayer: Lord, I thank You for Your goodness in my life, even in the good and challenging times. Thank You for Your saving grace and mercy. May I dwell in Your presence every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 3
Scriptures: Psalms 121:7, Proverbs 3:5-6, Psalms 28:7, Isaiah 30:15
Lay Down Your Quick Fixes And Defenses
The Lord protects us and watches over our lives (Psalm 121:7). In tough times, we often rely on our strength, but true peace comes when we surrender control to God. The childhood trauma I endured as a little girl from my mother’s battle with a mental illness left the adult me struggling with rejection, abandonment, and trust issues. These had me on defense for my safety and security in every relationship – even in my relationship with God. I can remember coming to a crossroads in my healing journey with God where I had to recognize that my safety was now in God, I had to let go of my defenses and trust God for my healing after years of childhood trauma, rejection, abandonment, and trust issues. It wasn’t easy, but God’s love purifies and brings lasting change. Just like the Samaritan woman, who initially defended herself countless times as Jesus offered her the gift of redemption. She too wanted to rely on all she knew – her reputation, her past, her day-in-day-out routine. But Jesus offered her something beyond all of that – a life with Him. This was something that would call her out of defense and into a life transformed by God. We too can discover the transformative power of God’s love when we let go of our defenses and let Him fight our battles.
Reflection: Reflect on areas of your life where you’ve built defenses. How have these defenses affected your peace and well-being? Pray about releasing them to God today.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I surrender my defenses to You today. Help me trust that You want to care for me and fight my battles. Guide me to a life of peace, free from fear and worry. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 4
Scriptures: John 4:15, Isaiah 55:1, Psalms 42:1, John 7:38
Don’t Want To Thirst Anymore
The Samaritan woman said, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty” (John 4:15). The Samaritan woman in this encounter must’ve felt that this encounter at this point was a chance at something new. In this scripture, you can tell she was crying out for saving from her current circumstances. She did not want to be the same. She did not want to thirst anymore for those things that did not nourish her soul but she wanted something more and that was with Jesus. We all reach a point when we long for something different, something better than what we’ve known. We want to be free from our pain and emptiness. My heart resonated with this when I yearned for deliverance from my past traumas. I had a season of my life where it felt that every good thing I had going for me such as relationships, opportunities, etc., were tarnished because of the lack of healing I had from my past trauma. And in that season I prayed and asked God to deliver me from my past and trauma and He did! Accepting God’s living water means finding freedom from our old ways. We become captivated by His peace and no longer thirst for our former lives. Today, ask God to reveal the heart posture you need to fully embrace Him and His gift.
Reflection: Think about a moment in your life when you longed for a change, a moment when you realized you were thirsty for something more. Reflect on how that thirst led you to seek God.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I pray for the heart posture that will help me fully accept Your gift. May I no longer thirst for my old life, but instead be captivated by Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 5
Scriptures: Micah 7:18, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Lamentations 3:22-23, Ephesians 2:8-9
A God Of Second Chances
God pardons sin and delights in showing mercy (Micah 7:18). Have you ever felt stuck, making the same mistakes over and over? I’ve been there, battling feelings of unworthiness. After enduring childhood trauma that left me bruised and bleeding out in my teenage years. It turned into a cold and heartless lifestyle where I scorned and hurt people that I love, did not care about what I said and did to others, and only lived and cared about myself in everything I did. I didn’t think God would want me – all broken, all hurt, bleeding out, all the deceit and the lies I participated in, all of the careless acts I have done. Could God want someone like me with all this sin in my story? Whew! I thank God for His grace, love, and mercy because those all granted me a second chance at life. An opportunity to give up all of that to be with Him and I never looked back. God’s hand was out and I walked not even knowing that God would blow my mind with the change of my heart, spirit, soul, and body through and through. I would become who He had always seen me as. The Samaritan woman too sat with all of her story and past as she journeyed in the hottest time of day avoiding rejection and judgment from others. But, Jesus uncovered those parts in her story and made her whole again through His redeeming power. God wants to heal us from whatever has hurt us. Bring ALL of you and your story to Jesus. He can heal. He can deliver. He can set things anew. This is a chance at a life filled with peace, love, restoration, and renewal. God bless you!
Reflection: Consider the areas in your life where you need a second chance. Reflect on God’s capacity for forgiveness and transformation.
Prayer: Father God, I surrender my past to You. Cleanse me, restore me, and give me a fresh start. Help me embrace the second chance You offer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 6
Scriptures: John 14:27, Philippians 4:6-7, Isaiah 26:3
The Peace Of God
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7). Knowing we are accepted and loved brings peace that sustains us through tough times. Just as the Samaritan woman left her water jar behind, we can leave behind our burdens when we experience this peace. From that day she had living water that flowed like a peaceful stream in her. She no longer needed other things; she just needed Jesus. As a trauma survivor, I carried the weight of my past, but God’s love and prayer helped me release it. Maybe you are experiencing an immense amount of pain in your life and you need peace. I want to encourage you to call on the Prince of Peace today and gain the peace that the world can not give you. Release the pain for an invitation of peace. I pray that you receive the peace that frees, heals, renews, restores, and is a breath of refreshing air. May it overflow through your being and life.
Reflection: Imagine having ultimate peace in your life. What would it look like in your family, home, and relationships? Write a prayer for this vision of peace.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, free me from the pain in my heart today. Fill me with Your peace, love, and joy. Help me release my burdens and embrace the peace only You can provide. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 7
Scriptures: Psalms 51:10, Ezekiel 36:26, Psalms 139:23-24
Clean My Heart, Lord
Create in me a new heart, oh God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me (Psalm 51:10) Just as the Samaritan woman’s heart was cleansed by Jesus, your heart can be too. Sometimes, past hurts and traumas make our hearts cold and bitter. My journey taught me that God wants to heal us deeply and purify our hearts. As I ponder a time in my life when I just bled out and was just doing things to feel loved and accepted, I think about our heart postures and how the heart, as it hurts, becomes cold and bitter. When we are hurt what matters is the hurt no longer has a space to occur again, right? I know that is what we want but there is more than merely healing from our pain when we offer it to Jesus who cleanses the hurt and pain. The heaviness that comes with brokenness in our hearts at times is more detrimental than the actual event that shifted things for our hearts. That is why we need something bigger and higher that will cure beyond the problems. Today, sit with the Lord and pray for the matters of your heart. Let Him cleanse and renew you from within.
Reflection: List the matters of your heart that you’ve been holding onto. Write a prayer for healing in each of these areas.
Prayer: Lord, cleanse my heart and renew my spirit. Remove anything that is not of You and fill me with Your peace and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Day 8
Scriptures: Ephesians 1:7, 1 Peter 1:18-19, 2 Corinthians 5:17, John 4:29
You Are Redeemed
The Samaritan Woman’s encounter with Jesus changed everything. She didn’t expect it, but that day, Jesus sought her out. She was invited into a new life, just as we are offered the invitation to eternal life in Christ. Sometimes, we struggle to accept this gift. We might feel unworthy, haunted by our past, or unsure of our identity in Christ due to labels and opinions. The journey of faith isn’t always easy, but know this: when you accept Jesus in your heart, you are redeemed. It may not make worldly sense, but it aligns perfectly with God’s heavenly standard. I’ve been through trauma, tears, and mismanagement of blessings, but I’ve come to realize that God’s redemption is a gift freely given. There’s no trial period, no amount of money can buy it, and no past actions can undo it. God knew you before you were formed in your mother’s womb. He knew the moment you’d turn to Him, and it was worth saving YOU. From this day on, you have to walk boldly in who you are. Now each time something comes to steal your peace and joy you can look at it and say “she is redeemed” and know with all your heart your personal redemption story and encounter!
Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on God’s redemption in your life. What is He speaking to your heart about redemption right now?
Prayer: Dear God, thank You for the incredible gift of redemption through Jesus Christ. I bask in Your love and the redemption it gives me. Help me live boldly and fully in this redeemed life through You. I am forever grateful. I thank You and I love You! Hallelujah! In Jesus Name, Amen.
