Life brings unexpected pain, making us question everything. Is God truly there, or even care? Can grief and joy coexist? In this 14-day journey inspired by Pastor Ed and Lisa Young’s new book, “A Path Through Pain,” you’ll discover the profound realization that even in the darkest moments, there’s a path through pain, and on that path, you’ll find hope, joy, and renewed faith.

Day 1

Scripture: Romans 8:17-18

Finding Purpose Amidst Pain

Think

Life’s road can often be filled with potholes of pain. From personal heartbreaks to global crises, pain is an inescapable part of our human experience. It’s a stark reminder of our broken world, marred by sin and imperfection. But this pain doesn’t have to exist without purpose.

Our challenge isn’t simply the existence of pain, but how we respond to it. Some allow pain to lead them into despair or anger, while others search for fleeting distractions. However, looking at the scriptures, we find a different call. Jesus, in his wisdom, teaches that those who mourn will find comfort. The Spirit guides us to bring our pain to him, to lay it at his feet, and to trust that he not only understands, but offers peace that can only come from him.

Imagine a trusted friend who, rather than dismissing your feelings, sits beside you in your darkest hour, comforting and understanding your pain. That’s the image of our God, one who sees our pain, knows it deeply and offers hope beyond it.

In view of eternity, our current struggles, as real and raw as they may be, are fleeting. Paul reminds us in the Book of Romans that the glory that awaits us is far greater than any pain we can comprehend now. So, while the hurt may be undeniable, our hope in Christ is unwavering.

Apply

Today, take a moment to reflect on a personal pain or struggle you’ve experienced. Instead of hiding it or masking it, bring it to God in prayer. Be honest in your emotions, knowing that he understands. As you pray, ask for the strength to see beyond the immediate hurt and embrace the eternal hope that God offers. Reach out to a fellow Christ follower in your local church and share your journey, allowing them to stand with you in faith and solidarity.

Pray

Heavenly Father, my pain sometimes feels overwhelming, but I know that you see, understand, and offer comfort. Help me keep my eyes on your eternal promise, knowing that today’s trials can’t compare to the glory that awaits. I lean on your strength and trust in your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 2

Scripture: Proverbs 16:18

Shared Scars, Unseen Wounds

Think

Imagine you are in a room full of people and can see each person’s invisible scars—evidence of pain experienced. We might be surprised by what we see! No matter the external facade, every individual carries burdens, heartbreaks, and wounds, marking them as members of an unspoken club. The experiences vary, but the universal truth is evident: everyone undergoes pain at some point in their lives.

But what happens when these scars, these moments of trauma, go untreated? Like physical wounds, emotional and psychological wounds can fester. They can give rise to dysfunction, leading to patterns of behavior that cause further hurt, not just to oneself but to others around them. It’s a domino effect where one unchecked hurt can lead to a cascade of issues, causing collateral damage.

The scriptures remind us that while pain might be universal, so is healing. God is a healer, a source of restoration. Yet a significant barrier to healing can often be our pride. By acknowledging our pain and seeking healing, we are not showing weakness, but strength—a strength that recognizes the need for a power greater than our own to mend our internal wounds.

Apply

Take a moment today to reflect on the hurts you’ve been holding on to. Are there areas of dysfunction in your life that might stem from untreated pain? Seek support through prayer, confiding in trusted individuals, or finding professional help. There’s strength in seeking healing.

Pray

Lord, every one of us carries wounds and scars. Help me recognize the areas in my life that need healing and lead me to others who can support me as I find restoration and peace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Day 3

Scriptures: Isaiah 42:2-3, Job 42:5

When Crisis Calls

Think

Every person will have a time in his life when something falls apart; crises are but inevitable acts we all must face. It’s easy, in these moments, to question the nature of God. Why would a loving God allow such pain? However, it’s imperative to remember that while God allows these trials, he doesn’t instigate them. The story of Job illustrates this point. Satan, out of spite and malice, wanted to tear down Job’s faith. Yet, even in Job’s most profound suffering, God never abandoned him.

God’s commitment to staying by our side during crises is more than just a comforting sentiment. It’s a promise. Isaiah paints a vivid picture of this assurance. Whether we’re drowning in metaphorical waters of despair or burning in the fires of tribulation, God pledges his unwavering presence.

These trials can often serve as avenues to a deeper relationship with God. At the end of his ordeal, Job had an epiphany. He moved from knowing about God to genuinely knowing him – profoundly and intimately. Job had made assumptions about God in his pain but never stopped talking to him. He ultimately was humbled in the presence of his holy and righteous God who loved him, and it transformed Job. God’s desire is not for us to suffer but for us to draw closer to him through every experience, especially the painful ones. Sometimes, God allows what he hates to accomplish what he loves.

Apply

Next time you find yourself in a crisis or see someone else undergoing a trial, pause and remind yourself (or them) of God’s presence. Let it not be a moment of questioning God’s intentions, but rather an opportunity to deepen your relationship with him. Share the story of Job with someone this week, emphasizing the ultimate revelation Job had about God’s character and his relationship with him.

Pray

Father, in my crisis moments, help me to always remember your presence and promises. Even when the path gets rocky, and the storms rage on, let me feel your unwavering support and love. Deepen my relationship with you, especially during the trials, and allow me to see your purpose in every situation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 4

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

I Surrender

Think

Imagine a tightrope walker at a circus. They’re perched high above the ground, the rope swaying beneath them. To the audience, it looks dangerous and wild. But the tightrope walker has a secret: they trust in their training and the tethered safety net below.

Surrendering to God is akin to that tightrope walker’s trust. While the path ahead may seem daunting, daily choosing to trust God’s guidance is akin to the tightrope walker’s reliance on their training and safety measures.

Many of us struggle to let go and let God take the reins in our lives. Just like a person clutching the sides of a raft during turbulent waters, we desperately tighten our grip. But when we look back on past challenges, we often see it was during our weakest moments, when we let go of our control and allowed God to work, that we experienced his strength and power the most.

Apply

Today, consider an area where you’re holding on tightly, afraid to let go and trust God. Visualize yourself opening your hands, releasing that concern, and taking a step of faith. Write down a step you can take this week to move toward surrender. Remember, in our sacrifice, we allow God’s power to move mightily in our lives.

Pray

Father, I acknowledge my need for you. I desire to surrender every area of my life, yet I often hold back out of fear. Help me to truly let go, to trust you fully, and to experience your strength in my weakness. Teach me to take your hand and let you lead me daily. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 5

Scriptures: Psalms 34:8, Psalms 100:5

Is God Good?

Think

Picture a scenario in which you’re at a bakery, and you’re handed a free sample of a cookie. It looks moist and enticing. You bite into it, savoring the taste, and conclude it is good. As opposed to seeing it in a glass case and imagining its goodness, this direct experience convinces you of its quality. The Psalmist invites us into a similar encounter. Psalm 34:8 beckons us to “taste and see” God’s goodness firsthand, suggesting it must be experienced.

While we live in a world of imperfections, where pain and evil often overshadow glimpses of good, the enduring nature of God’s goodness remains unchanging. Like us, Jesus experienced the pain of a broken world. Despite being perfect, he endured immense suffering. But his often difficult journey from the manger to the cross is a testament to God’s unwavering goodness amid earthly pain and evil.

We, as humans, inherently make mistakes and are prone to falter. Yet the ultimate testament to God’s unwavering goodness is Jesus. Despite being flawless, he experienced the harshest aspects of our fallen world and chose to suffer for our sake, providing us with a clear pathway to grace.

Apply

As you navigate this week, identify moments when God’s goodness shines through, even in unexpected places. It could be in the unexpected kindness of a neighbor lending a helping hand or the community rallying to support a family in need. Let these moments serve as reminders of his ever-present goodness in the presence of challenges.

Pray

Lord, open my eyes to see your goodness in the everyday moments and in the grand narrative of my life. Let the challenges I face draw me closer to you as I lean into your unwavering love and goodness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 6

Scriptures: 1 John 1:9, Psalms 139:23-24

You-Turn

Think

Visualize a road where there’s a clear sign indicating a U-turn point after driving for miles in the wrong direction. This U-turn isn’t merely about changing direction in travel but signifies a profound realization that the chosen path was wrong, and a better route is needed.

In the spiritual realm, we all have moments when we’re made acutely aware that we’ve veered off the path God intended for us. It could be a persistent guilt over a past mistake or a strained relationship that reminds us daily of our missteps. Just like that driver recognizing they’ve gone the wrong way, the weight of these mistakes becomes stifling. But just as that U-turn sign offers a chance to correct the course, repentance is God’s invitation for us to turn back to him.

Choosing to repent is a transformative act. By acknowledging our sins and deciding to change our ways, we realign with God’s path and experience the profound peace and freedom that comes with reconciliation.

Apply

Reflect on moments or decisions in your life when you might have taken a wrong turn. Consider the weight and the burden it has placed on your spirit. Today, seek God’s forgiveness and make that spiritual “You-Turn.” Experience the peace that comes from aligning with his will and purpose for your life.

Pray

Lord, guide me in recognizing where I’ve gone astray, and grant me the courage to turn back to you. Help me to experience the transformative power of repentance and to walk in your path. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 7

Scriptures: Matthew 6:14-15, Proverbs 16:18

Unchecked Baggage

Think

Have you ever traveled with an overstuffed suitcase? It’s cumbersome, heavy, and often causes complications at check-in counters. Similarly, our emotional baggage—like past hurts, disappointments, and unresolved conflicts—weighs us down in our daily lives. Just as that overstuffed suitcase can hinder a journey, unchecked emotional baggage can prevent us from truly moving forward, experiencing freedom, and living out the abundant life God intends for us.

Proverbs warns us about the dangers of unchecked emotions. Whether it’s pride, resentment, bitterness, or unresolved grief, it can lead to our downfall. When not addressed, these emotions become stumbling blocks, causing dysfunction and strained relationships.

However, there’s hope. We begin the healing process by identifying these destructive patterns and surrendering them to God. Forgiveness plays a pivotal role in this. It’s not about ignoring the pain or saying what happened was okay. Instead, forgiveness is about releasing the burden, freeing our hearts from the weight of past hurt, and moving forward with God’s grace and strength.

Apply

Today, take a few moments to reflect on the emotional baggage you might be holding on to. Is there someone you need to forgive? A situation you need to surrender? Approach God in prayer, seeking his guidance in releasing these burdens. Experience the freedom from letting go and walking in God’s glorious light.

Pray

Lord, help me identify the emotional baggage weighing me down. Grant me the strength to surrender my pains and hurts to you and to walk in the freedom of forgiveness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 8

Scriptures: Romans 5:3-5, James 1:2-4

It’s Like Tie-Dye

Think

Tie-dye is a method in which fabrics are twisted, folded, and bound in various ways before being dyed, resulting in unique, vibrant patterns. Initially, the fabric is subjected to what seems chaotic and messy. However, a beautiful design emerges from the chaos once the dye has set, and the material is unveiled.

Similarly, our lives undergo various twists and turns, sometimes filled with the chaos of pain and trials. Yet just as the fabric in tie-dye is transformed into something beautiful, God uses the difficulties we face to mold and shape our character. The process may seem messy, but when we persevere, we find there’s purpose in the pain.

Both Romans and James remind us of the transformative power of trials. They produce perseverance, which refines our character and anchors our hope. By working through our pain, leaning on God, and trusting in his redemptive plans, we allow him to fashion a unique, beautiful story from our experiences, akin to a vibrant tie-dye pattern.

Apply

Reflect on a recent challenge or pain you’ve faced. Instead of asking, “Why me?” try asking, “What can I learn from this?” and “What now?” Seek ways to grow from these experiences, drawing closer to God in the process. Remember, he desires to use every situation for your good and his glory.

Pray

Father, during my trials, help me to see the bigger picture. Give me the strength to persevere, trusting that you are molding and preparing me for something greater. May my life reflect your beautiful design, even through the challenges. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 9

Scripture: Exodus 15:26

One Step at a Time, Together

Think

Imagine you’re assembling a complex jigsaw puzzle. At first glance, the multitude of pieces can be overwhelming, and determining where each fits is a daunting task. Yet a beautiful picture emerges when each piece finds its perfect place.

Life often presents situations that can feel like scattered puzzle pieces—disjointed and perplexing. It’s tempting to force pieces together, hoping to find any appearance of order quickly. However, letting God guide our choices is like having the puzzle’s creator sitting beside us. He knows the bigger picture and where every piece belongs. By trusting him daily, even when the design isn’t immediately clear, we can be confident that a beautiful masterpiece is in the making. When placed in his hands, each decision and every moment contribute to his great plan for our lives.

Apply

Challenge yourself to approach each day as another puzzle piece. Seek God’s wisdom to understand how today’s piece fits the broader picture. Spend moments in quiet reflection, allowing his Word to illuminate the way. Recognize instances where you felt his guidance and create a journal of these moments, celebrating the evolving masterpiece of your life under his direction.

Pray

Father, I acknowledge the complexities of life and the moments I feel lost among its pieces. I trust you, the creator of my life’s puzzle, to guide every move. Help me to see the beauty in the process, trusting that you’re crafting a purposeful masterpiece. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 10

Scripture: Hebrews 6:18-19

Believe Jesus Is Your Loving Lord and Anchor

Think

Imagine being on a boat during a raging storm. The wind howls, and the waves threaten to capsize the vessel. But deep beneath the turbulent waters, an anchor keeps the boat from being carried away. It provides stability amidst the chaos. That anchor is not seen, but its effects are profoundly felt, ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

Jesus is much like that unseen anchor for our souls. In the storms of life, when trials rage around us, it is easy to feel adrift, uncertain, and fearful. But knowing and believing that Jesus is our steadfast anchor provides a sense of security and stability. He isn’t just a figure from the past or a theological concept; he’s a living, loving Lord who desires to anchor our souls, grounding us in his unchanging truth and love.

However, to experience the full anchoring effect of Jesus in our lives, it’s crucial to maintain an intimate relationship with him. Like checking the rope that binds a boat to its anchor, nurturing our relationship with Jesus ensures that we remain securely attached to him during life’s storms.

Apply

Spend some time today in prayer or meditation, focusing on the presence of Jesus as your anchor. Visualize handing over any worries, fears, or uncertainties to him, knowing he will keep you steady. Your relationship with him will continue to grow and be strengthened through reading scripture, prayer, and worship.

Pray

Jesus, you are my anchor, the one who keeps me grounded and secure – no matter how turbulent life gets. Strengthen my faith and intimacy with you so I never lose sight of your steadying presence. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 11

Scripture: Isaiah 40:28-31

Choose Him Daily to Lead You by the Hand

Think

Picture a hiker standing at the base of a vast mountain range. Every decision he makes – from the direction he chooses, to each step he takes – holds significant weight. The wise hiker uses a compass to navigate the way in the wilderness. The compass remains unwavering, always pointing them in the right direction.

Our walk with God is much like that of the hiker. There are days when the path is clear, and others when it seems engulfed in fog. Daily turning to God is like checking our spiritual compass. He is our constant, unchanging guide through life’s most complex terrains. When we commit to letting him direct our steps, we might find ourselves on paths we hadn’t planned, but they always align with his perfect direction.

Apply

Make it a daily practice to seek God’s guidance. Start your morning by reflecting on his Word, letting it guide your actions and decisions. As your day unfolds, pause to consult your “spiritual compass” – pray, reflect, and seek his wisdom in every challenge and crossroad. Consider creating a spiritual diary where you can capture moments of divine guidance or insights you gain by choosing his direction.

Pray

Father, today and every day, I seek your guidance. Help me to remember that even in uncertainty, you are my unwavering compass. Equip me to trust your direction, even when it’s unexpected. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Day 12

Scripture: Hebrews 10:24-25

Discover Hope and Healing in Community

Think

Imagine a lone ember separated from a blazing fire. As it lies apart, its warmth begins to fade, its glow dims, and eventually, it turns cold. Contrast this to embers within the fire, continuously fueled and reignited by their proximity to other embers. In many ways, this mirrors our lives. Our spirits can diminish on our own, especially during pain and challenges. But our hope, faith, and resilience are rekindled in the embrace of a supportive community.

The local church is God’s answer to save the world and our inherent need for connection, especially during moments of pain. It’s meant to be a safe haven where wounds are tended to, tears are shared, and hope is restored. Being part of such a community means being open, vulnerable, and transparent about our struggles. In these moments of honesty, we open the door to genuine healing, both for ourselves and others who find courage in our stories.

Apply

This week, consider attending a small group or a church gathering, even if it’s online. If you’re already part of one, take a step toward vulnerability. Share something you’ve been grappling with and allow others to support you. Equally, be available to support someone else, reminding them that they are not alone.

Pray

Lord, thank you for the gift of community. Help me find the courage to be vulnerable and transparent, seeking healing within the fellowship of believers. Equip me to reflect on the hope and promises I have in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 13

Scripture: Hebrews 6:18-19

Unreliable Anchors

Think

It’s a picture we can all relate to: desperately seeking something to hold on to in the stormy seas of life. More often than not, we gravitate toward anchors that appear promising, but eventually let us down. These are our “plastic anchors” – those things we believe will give us stability, but in truth, are as unreliable as a plastic bottle trying to hold down a ship.

In our search for security, we turn to career success, relationships, financial stability, or even our abilities. Yet, these are temporary and can be swept away in an instant. Only one anchor holds true in every season of life: God.

The promises of God, as detailed in Scripture, give us a foundation unlike any other. They aren’t mere words, but guarantees backed by the integrity and character of God. It’s impossible for him to lie. So, when he promises to be with us, to guide us, and to sustain us, he truly means it. And the beauty of this anchor is that it connects us not just to earthly security, but to eternal hope and peace in Christ.

Apply

Assess the anchors in your life. Are you placing your trust in “plastic bottles” that may leave you drifting aimlessly? If so, consider reorienting your focus toward Jesus, our loving Lord and the true anchor for our souls. Discover his promises in Scripture, and remind yourself daily of the unshakeable hope that can be found in him. Join a Bible study or group in your local church to dig deeper into understanding and embracing Jesus as your anchor.

Pray

Father, I confess that I often seek security in fleeting things. Help me anchor my soul in you, the only true and steadfast source of security. Let your promises be my guiding light, and may I always find hope and peace in your unwavering love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 14

Scripture: Psalms 34:18

Embracing Hope During the Holidays

Think

The festive season, whether it’s Thanksgiving with its themes of gratitude and family gatherings or Christmas with its message of hope and redemption, often paints a picture of joy, togetherness, and celebration. But for many, this season can magnify feelings of loss, loneliness, or sorrow. Memories of happier times or loved ones no longer with us can overshadow the festive mood.

Imagine sitting at a dinner table adorned with festive decorations, surrounded by laughter and chatter, yet feeling a void inside. For numerous individuals, this is a poignant reality. Whether it’s the absence of a family member, the sting of memories, or the weight of unfulfilled hopes, the contrast between external appearance and internal pain can be drastic.

However, these holidays also carry a profound message: the presence of hope and the possibility of healing. Thanksgiving is a time of finding gratitude, even in the face of adversity. At the same time, Christmas celebrates God sending his only Son into the world, knowing the anguish he would experience. God’s presence in the world wasn’t introduced against a backdrop of perfection, but amidst pain and challenges. This serves as a powerful reminder that Jesus understands our pain and desires to be near and help us during our most challenging moments. Your Lord is also ready to give rest to your soul no matter what burden you carry.

Apply

If you find yourself battling pain this season, give yourself permission to acknowledge and feel it. But also intentionally invite God into that space. Reflect on the deeper meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas: gratitude and hope in all circumstances. Find a quiet moment to write down things you’re grateful for or sit and savor the memories of a loved one. Consider reaching out to friends or family who can provide support during this season.

Pray

God, I seek your comforting presence. Thank you for being close to the brokenhearted. Help me to find moments of peace and healing this holiday season. Guide me to your Word so I may find comfort knowing you are with me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
