2 May: Beyond the Visible

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11:1–6

While the history books point to July 16, 1945—the day a nuclear flash lit up the New Mexico desert—as the birth of the Atomic Age, the concept actually traces back much further. Centuries before we had the technology to even glimpse the universe’s smallest components, the Greek philosopher Democritus (c. 460–370 BC) was already theorizing about the atom’s power. He relied on a deep understanding of things he couldn’t physically see, laying the groundwork for atomic theory through insight alone.

This mirrors the spiritual life. The Bible explains that the very core of faith is holding onto what remains invisible to the naked eye. As Hebrews 11:1 puts it, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” This isn’t just a matter of “thinking happy thoughts” or crossing our fingers; it is a grounded confidence in a God who, while unseen, is the most solid reality there is.

We can see the “fingerprints” of this reality everywhere:

  • In Creation: His majesty is written across the stars (Psalm 19:1).
  • In Jesus: His invisible heart and character were made tangible through His Son, who came to walk among us and prove the Father’s love (John 1:18).

The apostle Paul reminded us that God is the very atmosphere of our lives—the One in whom “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Because of this, “we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Even when our eyes can’t track His movements, we can rest easy knowing we aren’t navigating this world solo. The unseen God is walking right beside us, every single step of the way.

Reflect & Pray

In a world where seeing is believing, in what ways do you struggle to live by faith in God? What has strengthened your faith, and in what areas do you need to rest in Him more fully?

Father, sometimes it’s a struggle to believe what I can’t see. Nevertheless, You’ve promised Your faithful love and that You’ll never leave me or forsake me. Help me to rest in that promise.
