20 Aug: Peace in the Dark Hours

A sharp noise jolted Joanne awake. She heard glass breaking, and though she wished someone else were in the house with her, she forced herself to get up and check. The street outside was quiet, and nothing in the house seemed disturbed—until she noticed the shattered mirror.
When investigators arrived, they found a bullet lodged only half an inch from the gas line. Had it hit the line, she might not have survived. They later learned the shot came from a nearby apartment complex, but the discovery left Joanne uneasy in her own home. She asked God for peace, and once the broken glass was cleared away, her heart finally settled.
Psalm 121 reminds us where to turn when fear or uncertainty rises. It tells us that our “help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth” (verse 2). The One who formed the universe is the same One who watches over us (verse 3). We rest, but He never does—“He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep” (verse 4). His care covers our days and our nights (verse 6), and His protection is constant “from this time forth, and even forevermore” (verse 8).
Whatever we face, God sees it clearly. He waits for us to look toward Him. Our circumstances may not shift immediately, but He promises His peace right in the middle of them.
