18 Apr: Beauty in the Hard Ground
Blessed be the Lord. Ruth 4:14
Scripture Reading: Ruth 4:13–22
When James Barrie was only six, his older brother David died in a tragic ice-skating accident—just a day before turning fourteen. In the years that followed, James watched his mother Margaret carry deep grief. At times, she found a strange comfort in the thought that her son would never have to face the hardships of growing up. That idea stayed with James. Years later, it took shape in his imagination as Peter Pan—a boy who never ages. Like a flower breaking through concrete, something meaningful grew out of profound sorrow.
There’s something deeply reassuring in knowing that God can do this on an even greater scale—bringing good out of life’s hardest moments. You see it clearly in the story of Book of Ruth. Naomi lost both her sons, leaving her vulnerable and without support. Yet her daughter-in-law Ruth refused to leave her, choosing instead to stay, care for her, and follow her God (Ruth 1:16). What seemed like the end of their story became the beginning of something unexpected. Ruth remarried and had a son: “They called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David” (Ruth 4:17). Generations later, Obed would be listed in the family line of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).
God’s mercy often shows up in ways we don’t anticipate. It reaches into places we thought were beyond hope. Keep your eyes open—you might notice it today.

Reflect & Pray
When have you seen God bring unexpected good out of difficult circumstances in your life? How can you share what He’s done with others?
Loving God, I thank You that one day You’ll wipe every tear from my eyes because You’re greater than every heartache or difficulty I’ll ever face.
