Let your gentleness be evident to all. Philippians 4:5
Today’s Scripture: Philippians 4:1–7
In one of Dr. Seuss’s delightfully quirky tales, he tells of two creatures—the “North-Going Zax” and the “South-Going Zax”—who meet face to face on the Prairie of Prax. Neither will move aside. Each insists on standing his ground, determined not to budge “even if the whole world stands still.” But the world doesn’t stop—it simply builds a highway around them and moves on.
It’s a funny story with a sharp edge of truth. How often do we, too, dig in our heels? Our pride whispers that we must be right, that backing down means losing. And yet, in our stubbornness, we often stop growing and block the path of peace.
Thankfully, God doesn’t leave us stuck in our pride. He patiently softens our hearts. The apostle Paul saw this kind of conflict among believers in Philippi, so he lovingly urged two women to reconcile (Philippians 4:2). He reminded the church to have “the same mindset as Christ Jesus” (2:5)—a heart of humility and self-giving love. Then he called on others to step in and help (4:3), because restoring peace often takes a community willing to walk together in grace.
There are moments to stand firm in truth, but stubbornness for its own sake is never Christlike. Many of life’s quarrels simply aren’t worth the cost of division. When we humble ourselves, listen to godly counsel, and choose unity over pride, we discover the freedom of walking in the way of Jesus—the One who yielded everything so that we might be one.
